High entropy oxides (HEOs) have attracted wide interest for chemical catalysis owing to abundant active sites, adjustable specific surface area, stable crystal structure, extraordinary geometric compatibility, and unique electronic balance factors, exhibiting huge potential value for commercial exploitation. Herein, the recent progress and current challenges of HEOs from the typical synthetic strategies, unique structural features and intrinsic properties to key catalytic applications in both thermo-catalysis and electro-catalysis are comprehensively summarized, highlighting extraordinary significance for chemical catalysis. In brief, the HEOs obtained by different synthetic strategies, along with their merits and demerits, structural features, and derived physical-chemical properties endowed by the entropy-driven effect, allowthem withhighly efficient catalytic applications. More importantly, the remarkable enhancement of catalytic performance based on the HEOs through multiple design strategy of structure adjustment and properties modification are discussed to further motivate the development in this emerging field. Especially, the reaction mechanisms for related catalytic reactions are analysed to shed light on the unique advantages of HEOs and their derived catalysts. Finally, the future directions and challenging perspectives for chemical catalysis over HEOs are also put forward.
