Recently, micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) have received booming development as next-generation micro-electrochemical energy storage devices for self-powered, integrated and wearable systems owing to excellent performance capability. Specially, the rapid frequency response characteristics make them as potential candidate to replace the conventional capacitors and function as AC line-filtering for pulse energy rectifying or current ripple filtering in kilo hertz. However, the associated device fundamental component, architectures and correctly characterizing of MSCs applied for filter applications are rarely considered and reported. Besides, the balance between capacitance and frequency response is a huge challenge needed to be overcome. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent advances of MSCs for AC line-filtering from fundamental mechanisms, appropriate characterizations and emerging applications. The special focus is given on the progress of microfabrication strategies, electrode materials and electrolytes for high-frequency MSCs. Finally, the perspectives and insights into the development of MSCs in different frequency range are discussed for AC line-filtering applications.
