The most characteristic feature of the 21st century is the rapid technological advances in many fields. The foundation of all these innovations is energy generation, storage, and delivery. In this editorial of two-dimensional (2D) energy materials, we will discuss electrochemical energy storage materials and devices with a primary focus on graphene and other 2D materials (2DMs). In principle, electrochemical energy storage devices have two major types- supercapacitors (SCs) and batteries, which are mainly differentiated from their energy storage mechanism. SCs store charge either as an electrical double layer at electrode-electrolyte interfaces or through Faradic redox reactions at active sites. In contrast, batteries operate solely through redox reactions between electrode materials and ionic species in electrolytes. Currently, the research progress of 2DMs is moving fast in the fabrication of new materials and their multifunctional composites, and in turn, is helping the development of SCs and batteries (Fig. 1). To highlight the opportunities of 2DMs for energy storage, we feature some highly comprehensive topical reviews recently published in Energy Storage Materials.
